TEXAS BROTHERS CHARGED FOR POSSESSING MARIJUANA

The Longview Police Department took two brothers into custody on Jan. 13 for being in possession of more than five pounds of marijuana. A third brother was also detained for allegedly hitting an officer.

The incident began around 8:15 a.m. when one brother, a 22-year-old man, was pulled over for speeding. The officer who stopped his car claimed that he could smell marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle and conducted a search of it. That officer allegedly found 1 pound and 3.5 ounces of marijuana contained in several different packages. The 22-year-old faces charges of possession of marijuana between 4 ounces and 5 pounds.

Officers later obtained a search warrant for the second brother’s home, a 25-year-old man, which they executed around 8:30 p.m. Upon searching the second brother’s home, more than five pounds of marijuana were allegedly discovered as well as 400 grams of promethazine, a drug that contains codeine. The 25-year-old was charged with possessing between 5 and 50 pounds of marijuana in addition to possession of a controlled substance under 400 grams. A third brother, 29, reportedly showed up at the home during the search. Sources indicate that he refused to leave the premises and that he hit an officer. He was charged with assault of a law enforcement officer.

People accused of marijuana possession or other drug crimes might want legal advice during this time since the penalties associated with those charges could range from jail time to hefty fines. An attorney may be able to negotiate lesser pleas or fight cases through trial. Charges could be disputed if officers did not have a proper warrant or probable cause to pull over a defendant.
